| Van Cortlandt Manor, located
within Croton-On-Hudson, NY is quite the educational feature of
Westchester. Visit this living museum and get not only an earful
of details but an eyeful as well. You'll get to learn all about
Stephen Van Cortlandt who was the first native-born mayor of New
York City. One will also get an insightful understanding of this
manor's history as well as that of the Van Cortlandt descendents
through the ages.
Onboard is a working farm which yours truly had the pleasure of
walking through during our guided tour. Also within the grounds
is the Manor Office, Tenant Farm House itself, Ferry House and the
Blacksmith Shop amongst other structures. There's also the tavern
not far away and of course the manor itself. Therein lie glimpses
of life from so long ago. It'll take hold of you as you grasp to
understand the hard-lives of servants from olden days.
Featuring mainly original furnishings, the centerpiece of this
locale, Van Cortlandt Manor (18th Century, Stone), also features
amongst other rooms and items, the grand kitchen which has within
an original hearth, beehive oven, and an extensive collection of
cooking equipment and utensils.
When planning a trip here, one might want to consider how Croton
Point Park is located not far at all from Van Cortlandt Manor (just
south-west).
