NYC Day Trips - Washington Irving's Sunnyside
(Irvington, Historic Hudson Valley)

Visit the Beyond Our Borders Main Page - View Photos of Sunnyside

Sunnyside, a National Historic Landmark and part of the Historic Hudson Valley network of sights offers one and all a rich educational glimpse into the life of Washington Irving (1783-1859). Irvington Founded in 1692 as Camptown, was renamed in honor of the American author Washington Irving in 1852. Irving of course is best known for those great classics, Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

At this historical site one gets to go on a tour of the premises and through the beautiful 18th-century cottage in which Washington Irving had lived. You'll get to see the furniture pieces, bedrooms and other rooms decorated in the period style of the time as well as learn plenty of interesting items such as how food was stored and prepared, how folks back then went about doing laundry, ironing, and carrying out many other household chores. 'But that's not all. You'll get a great chance to peak inside Irving's studies where the master himself would sit and work away.

Getting there:

  • One can also take the Seasonal Sleepy Hollow Cruise which departs from Manhattan and pays a visit to this historical spot.
  • Sunnyside is located along Route 9 which is an extremely pleasant and scenic route running north and south. (Stay tuned for more details)
